Origins and Early Years

Bandaranaike International Airport, also known as Katunayake Airport, is the main international gateway to Sri Lanka. The airport was originally established as Royal Air Force (RAF) Station Negombo by the British during World War II. It served as a military airbase for the Royal Air Force until Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) gained independence in 1948.

Transition to a Civilian Airport

After independence, the airbase was handed over to the Sri Lankan government, and by 1964, it was developed into a commercial airport. It was officially opened as Katunayake International Airport in 1967. However, in 1970, it was renamed Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in honor of former Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike.

Development and Expansion

• 1980s-1990s: The airport saw major expansions, including the construction of a new passenger terminal and improved facilities to handle increasing air traffic.
• 2001 Attack: On July 24, 2001, the airport was attacked by the Tamil Tigers (LTTE), causing significant damage to aircraft and infrastructure. However, it was quickly restored to full operation.
• 2005-2013: The airport underwent further modernization, including the expansion of the Terminal 1 and the construction of a second runway.
• 2021-Present: The Terminal 2 expansion project aims to increase capacity and improve passenger services, making BIA a more competitive hub in South Asia.

Current Status

Today, BIA is Sri Lanka’s busiest airport, handling millions of passengers annually. It serves as the primary hub for SriLankan Airlines and connects the country to major global destinations. The airport continues to evolve, with ongoing projects to enhance its infrastructure and services.

First impressions of the facilities and amenities Bandaranaike Airport Colombo Srilanka

I cannot express how much these moments mean to me. My first flight, that too with my husband, who is my everything in life... the feeling I wanted to experience since childhood, flying through the air, that feeling, that desire that was in my heart since childhood, was fulfilled today with my husband. The journey from Pakistan to Bangkok, with a 3-hour stop at Sri Lanka Airport, was an amazing experience.

Efficiency: 

The immigration process was smooth and efficient, which is always a plus after a long flight.

Facilities: 

The airport is clean and well-maintained, with plenty of seating areas, ATMs, currency exchange counters, and free Wi-Fi (although bandwidth can be limited).

Shopping: 

A decent selection of duty-free shops offers international brands of perfumes, liquor, chocolates, and electronics. For a touch of Sri Lanka, take advantage of the shops selling local tea, spices, and handicrafts - perfect souvenirs!

A Functional Airport with Room for Improvement

Overall, BIA is a functional airport that gets the job done.  The arrival and departure processes were efficient, and the duty-free shops offered a decent selection.  However, the limited food options and confusing layout could be improved.

So, desi travellers, is BIA a good airport?

If you prioritize efficiency and a decent selection of duty-free shops, BIA will get you where you need to go comfortably.
